Maharaja Duleep Singh, also known as Princess Maharaja Sir Duleep Singh, GCSI, or Sir Dalip Singh and later nicknamed "Black Prince of Perthshire", was the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. He is the youngest son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the only son of Maharani Jind Kaur. He came to power in September 1843, at the age of five, with his mother reigning in his name, and after their defeat in the Anglo Sikh War, under the leadership of an English citizen. He was later kidnapped by the British royal family, then exiled to England at the age of 15, where he befriended Queen Victoria, who is said to have written about the Punjabi Maharaja: "Those eyes and those teeth so beautiful ". The queen is the godmother of some of her children. He died young, spending most of his later years in the UK. His mother reigned effectively when he was very young and he succeeded in seeing her again on January 16, 1861 in Calcutta and returned with her to England.
